about

A Tanzanian school song in Swahili, brought to us by Zem Moffat and arranged by Harry Campbell. “Nice flowers are lovely, when you look at them you smile and feel happy. Buzz buzz buzz, fly away mother bee, search far and wide for a nice flower for food.” This appears to be an African take on a traditional melody from the Upper Rhine, which (with words by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, 1843) forms part of Humperdinck’s operetta Hänsel und Gretel. The lyrics are a riddle about a little man in the forest who wears a crimson cloak and a black hood and stands on one leg. It’s… the rose-hip! (Probably.)

lyrics

Ukiyatazama yanamelemeta
Hakuna limoja lisilopendeza

Nzu, nzu, nzu, eeh mama nyuki lia wee
Toka mbali kutafuta ua zuri la chakula
Nzu, nzu, nzu, eeh mama nyuki lia wee
